Hugh Jackman has played the role of Wolverine in an impressive nine films within the “X-Men” universe. However, he has disclosed that his portrayal of the Marvel character has had an impact on a crucial aspect of himself, which is his voice. Here’s more on how playing Wolverine ruined Hugh Jackman’s voice.
In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s “Front Row,” the actor discussed how the extended period of playing Wolverine, particularly the constant “growling and yelling” in character, has caused harm to his vocal cords.
Hugh Jackman, aged 54, shared that he has caused harm to his voice due to his portrayal of Wolverine. “My falsetto is not as powerful as it once was, and I believe it’s a direct result of the growling and yelling,” he stated. He further explained that some of the things he did while playing Wolverine would have appalled his voice teacher from drama school.
In addition to his career as an actor and action hero, Jackman is renowned for his work on Broadway and in musical films like “The Greatest Showman” and “Les Misérables.” This means that his voice is a valuable asset to him.
Despite being taught a “technique” in school on how to shout and yell without damaging his voice, the Tony award-winning actor, Hugh Jackman, admitted that playing Wolverine has had some long-lasting effects on his vocal cords.
“During ‘Wolverine,’ I did some screaming and yelling, which I believe has caused damage to my voice. I am currently working on improving my voice with the help of a singing teacher, and I take care not to injure myself,” explained Jackman. He added that he puts in considerable effort into physical movement and vocal preparation for every role.
Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as Logan/Wolverine for the tenth time in the upcoming film “Deadpool 3,” alongside Ryan Reynolds. The film is expected to be released in late 2024.
In the previous month, the star of “The Son” addressed the long-standing speculation that he used steroids to prepare for his role as Wolverine in any of the nine “X-Men” films. During an interview with Chris Wallace for the HBO Max series “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?”, Jackman attributed his impressive physique to hard work and dedication.
Wallace referenced the criticism that Jackman faced when he was announced to be returning as Wolverine in the third “Deadpool” movie, with many people questioning whether he used steroids to bulk up. “You got so jacked for these movies,” Wallace said.
Jackman denied the allegations, stating that he loves his job and the Wolverine character too much to take steroids. “I had been told anecdotally about the side effects of that, and I was like, ‘I don’t love it that much,'” he said.
He then went on to say that he achieved his physique through traditional means, apologizing humorously to vegans and chickens for the amount of poultry he had to consume to gain muscle.
